Jakarta Gov urged to investigate cheating in schools

The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA) on Wednesday urged Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo to investigate a report that large-scale cheating took place at Pesanggrahan 06 (afternoon class) Elementary School during the recent national examinations.
According to local media, the mother of a student at the school first revealed the incident.
“A team must be formed to get to the bottom of this. This [cheating] incident could jeopardize the students' future,” Komnas PA chairman Arist Merdeka Sirait said Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
“We are worried that the students will become plagiarists in the future.”
On Thursday, Komnas PA plans to meet the Jakarta Social Welfare Agency to discuss the incident and ways to prevent cheating in future, he said.
“We will propose two solutions. First, the establishment of a fact-finding team, and second, there must be certainty of the protection of children,” Arist said.
Based on a report obtained by Komnas PA, teachers at Pesanggrahan 6 gathered the top 10 students, who were then divided into groups and assigned to give answers to students. One of the students, MAP, reported the incident to his parents, who later talked to commission about it.
Another similar case allegedly took place at Gadel 2 Elementary School in Surabaya, but the whistleblower was labeled by the school and other parents as a traitor.
However, local authorities finally suspended the school principal and teachers who were found to be involved.
