Google acquires Motorola’s mobile phone division

By Nigel Chew

15 August 2011 – Google has just announced in a press release that they have come to an agreement with Motorola Mobility in which the tech giant will buy over Motorola for USD 12.5 billion. This translates into an acquisition of USD 40 per share of Motorola stock. Google’s CEO Larry Page had this to say:

“Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers”

An unexpected move to say to the least, but this will now better prepare Google to compete head on against Apple’s iPhone, as a wholly-owned hardware subsidiary will give the Google complete control over device hardware. How this will affect Google’s relationship with other Android partners remains to be seen.
