Police Claim to Be Working to Bring Fugitive Nazaruddin Back to Indonesia

Banda Aceh. National Police claim they know where fugitive lawmaker Muhammad Nazaruddin is and are “working closely” with international law enforcement agencies to secure his return to Indonesia.

National Police Chief Gen. Timur Pradopo said on Friday that they were doing everything to bring the rogue Democratic Party legislator home.

Despite claiming police knew where Nazaruddin was, Timur refused to say if the corruption suspect was still believed to be in Singapore.

“I don’t want to talk about it. But we know where he is,” he told journalists.

Asked if police had sent officers to Singapore or any other country, Timur asked for “patience,” saying they were attempting to ensure he appeared before Corruption Eradication Commission investigators “as fast as we can.”

Nazaruddin has been named a suspect in a bribery case linked to the construction of the athletes’ village in Palembang for November’s Southeast Asian Games.

The scandal has seriously damaged the credibility of the Democrats, the political vehicle of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Yudhoyono, whose approval ratings have taken a steep dive recently, campaigned on a antigraft platform though corruption remains endemic in Indonesia.

Nazaruddin fled the country on May 23 after a meeting with senior Democratic Party figures.

Indonesia does not have an extradition treaty with Singapore, which has harbored a number of wealthy Indonesian fugitives.
