Surakarta bids to host next PSSI Congress

Surakarta, Central Java, is offering  to host the third Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) Congress this year, after the first two attempts ended in chaos.

Surakarta Mayor Joko Widodo said he had talked with PSSI normalization committee chair Agum Gumelar.

"I have lobbied Agum. Now we will send our official proposal," Joko said Sunday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The proposal will be delivered by Surakarta Deputy Mayor Hadi Rudyatmo, who is also a member of the normalization committee. "Tomorrow I will take the proposal to a meeting in Senayan," Hadi said.

Hadi said Surakarta would be the perfect place to hold the congress as it did not have any interests in the proceedings of the congress. Surakarta has no vote, as the Surakarta branch of the PSSI was frozen by former PSSI chair Nurdin Halid.

Security will be a huge factor in determining the site of the congress, considering the last two PSSI meetings in Pekanbaru and Jakarta ended prematurely due to disorder and chaos.

"We have a good security management team. If we didn't we would not make the proposal," Hadi said.

The last congress held on May 20 at the Sultan Hotel in Jakarta ended with no resolution after a group of participants calling themselves Group 78 insisted on nominating Army chief Gen. George Toisutta and oilman Arifin Panigoro. Toisutta’s and Arifin’s candidacies were rejected by a PSSI appeal committee and later upheld by world soccer body FIFA.  The two are now suing FIFA in an international arbitration.
