PLN channels Rp 500b to improve electricity in E. Nusa Tenggara

State electricity company PT PLN has set aside Rp 546.3 billion to improve its network access in East Nusa Tenggara, increasing its coverage from 27.5 percent to 72.5 percent of the province this year.
“There are still plenty of residents of East Nusa Tenggara who are deprived of electricity,” Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry electric power directorate secretary Agoes Triboesono said Friday in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
The company would conduct a number of programs to provide electricity to villages and build several generators, which are set to commence operations this year. Up to 11 generators are planned to begin operating before the end of this year, Agoes said.
A geothermal generator with a capacity of 4 x 2.5 megawatts in Manggarai is slated to go online soon, while a steam-powered generator in Bolok with the capacity of 2x15 megawatts is scheduled to begin operating in 2012.
The others facilities include a microhydro power plant in Ende, with a capacity of 2x1 megawatts.
East Nusa Tenggara Governor Frans Lebu Raya said a number of companies and investors had been reluctant to build factories in the province because of the lack of electricity. The problem had also hampered the growth of small enterprises, he said.
